Overview

Upper Mustang is an arid river valley lying near the Annapurna Circuit in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas. In the past, this valley was a forbidden kingdom within Nepal. Due to decades of isolation from the world, it developed its own tradition and culture, which closely resembles Tibetan culture. Currently, Upper Mustang forms a prime trek destination due to its unique desert-like terrain, its unique history, and culture.

Itinerary

Day 1 Drive to Pokhara (205km) 6 to 7 hrs

Scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, the charming lakeside town that serves as the gateway to Upper Mustang.

Day 2 Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (2720m) and trek to Kagbeni (2800m)

Take a thrilling flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, a gateway town to Upper Mustang. Enjoy breathtaking aerial views. Then, embark on a short trek to Kagbeni, a village where two branches of the Kali Gandaki River converge. Explore its rich Tibetan heritage.

Day 3 Trek from Kagbeni to (2800m)to chele (3055m)

Begin your trek into Upper Mustang, ascending through arid landscapes with dramatic rock formations and charming villages. Reach Chele, a traditional village offering a glimpse into local Mustang culture and stunning mountain vistas.

Day 4 Trek from Chele (3055m) to Syangboche (3903m)

Today's challenging trek takes you through a unique high-altitude desert landscape dotted with prayer flags and mani stones. Ascend to Syangboche, a picturesque village nestled amidst dramatic scenery, offering panoramic views of the Mustang Valley. 

Day 5 Trek from Syangboche (3930m) to Ghami (3520m)

Day 6 Trek from Ghami (3520m) to Tsarang (3505m)

Day 8 Rest and explore day in Lo Mathang (3810) [Kingdom Lo]

Take a well-deserved rest day to explore the wonders of Lo Manthang. Visit the Raja's Palace, explore the impressive gompas, and witness traditional Mustang life unfold.

Day 9 Trek from Lo Mathang (3810m) to Ghami(3520m)

Begin your journey back, retracing your steps through the dramatic Mustang landscapes. Enjoy the changing perspectives and soak in the unique atmosphere.

Day 10 Trek from Ghami(3520m) to Samar (3700m)

Explore a diverse landscape with dramatic rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and hidden caves. Ascend to Samar, a small village nestled amidst a picturesque valley offering stunning mountain views.

Day 11 Trek from Samar to(3700m) to chusang(2980m)

Day 12 Trek from Chusang (2980m)to Muktinath(3760m)
